I think they should keep her but make her less.. u know wierd cuz ponys get mad at her and that teaches kids that if u make a mistake u r SHAMED UPON! they should make all the other ponies not get all pissed off.
The name Derpy Hooves is a big shout out to the fans, as it was the fans that gave her the name. Taking that back after complaints from parents would be, as it said in the video, a big shot in the foot for Hasbro.
Also, how is "Derpy" or even the character related to being mentally disabled? The name was given because, wasn't it like an animation error or something, the character was cross-eyed for a scene, making fans think it was just a "derp" look? And to me, the character is more just clumsy or accident-proned, NOT mentally disabled. So if anything, the parents who claim this are the ones being offensive to mentally disabled people.
Until Hasbro gives a claim, we should just stay calm instead of bringing out our torches and pitchforks. If Hasbro DOES decide the change the name, which I HIGHLY doubt, then we can start with the petitions and sending emails to Hasbro.
And ya that's just it. Just because she's cross eyed, talks funny, and knocks into things, doesn't mean she's disabled. It means she's related to anybody who just likes to laugh and see the fun in things. I do think it really is rude to jump to the conclusion that she has mental retardation.
And they are saying that they might bring her name down, it is not really official, but it doesn't hurt to polish the pitchforks and oil the torches ey?
Until its officially announced, we can keep them at the ready, I just don't want people to see "Derpy might get a name change" and start sending hatemail to Hasbro with "WHY ARE YOU CHANGING DERPY?!" before anything is really announced.
But again, I'm in high doubts that Hasbro will change it. It was a fan-given name, and saying her as "Derpy" in an episode was a big shout out to those fans, just like the term Brony and other shoutouts. If Hasbro did decide to change it, instead of dealing with some overreacting parents, they'd be dealing with a huge unhappy fanbase. I'm sure they can decide on which is worse.
And I'm pretty sure the only hate mail they're getting is the parent that is over examining Derpy way too much. And based on how, yes a lot of fans will be mad, I doubt they'll all stop watching the show completely because she was such a small character. Hell, that was the only time she really spoke. So I don't think they believe that it'll be a huge dent if they do get rid of her.
And Derpy would not be considered a small character with all the bronies I've talked to. She's more of a main background character with huge popularity, now even though yes, that one episode was the only time she had actual dialogue. She has a big fanbase, tons of threads dedicated to Derpy. Everyone who's a brony knows who Derpy is.
